CPRC report to Academic Council November 2004

Curriculum and Program Review Committee

Report to Academic Council

at its meeting of November 16, 2004

For Approval

1. Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons)/Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Bridge

The Curriculum and Program Review Committee recommends:

that Academic Council approve the proposal for a four year Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) with three areas of specialization: Human Resources Management; Public Relations; and Sales and Communications Management.

that Academic Council approve the proposal for a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) Bridge

Rationale:

This program is designed to prepare students with a fundamental technological and business administration knowledge as well as communication skills, leadership, critical and innovative thinking, and problem solving as required in business organizations.

The target market for this program is students who don't have the same interests in mathematical and programming aspects of the BCom. While our student population in the BCom consists of a majority of males, we anticipate that the BBA, with these particular specializations will be of particular interest to female applicants interested in a business degree.

The curriculum of the BBA program has both the breadth and depth in preparing students in the areas of specialization that they enroll. Students may also combine a minor in a subject offers at UOIT, such as social policy offered by the UOIT Faculty of Social Science, in their BBA program by taking the minor subject courses as general electives in the program. This option enriches the learning experience and expands the career opportunities for the students.

The revised program proposal is included as Appendix A 698KB [This link opens in a new window.]. The revised Bridge Program details are attached asAppendix B 131KB pdf [This link opens in a new window.]. The revised business plan is included as Appendix C 190KB pdf [This link opens in a new window.]

2. Bachelor of Education New Teachable Subjects

The curriculum and Program Review Committee recommends:

that Academic Council approve two new teachable subjects into the Consecutive Pre-Service Teacher Education Program: Visual Arts and English.

Rationale:

The addition of these two new subjects to the teachable mix has resulted from discussions between UOIT and the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) to explore pathways for qualified OCAD degree graduates to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree. Graduates of undergraduate arts and design programs are less likely to have the coursework for a second teachable in math, science or computing science. OCAD grads might obtain coursework for a second teachable in several areas, but English was judged by the Faculty of Education to be the most marketable alternative. The Ontario College of Teachers has been involved in these discussions and is supportive of the plan.

The program proposal is included in Appendix D 479KB [This link opens in a new window.]. The business plan is included as Appendix E 34KB [This link opens in a new window.].

3. Revised Terms of Reference

The Curriculum and Program Review Committee recommends:

that Academic Council approve its revised Terms of Reference as attached.

Rationale:

With the implementation of Faculty Council legislation last May, the role of the Curriculum and Program Review Committee changed. The changes, reflected in item 2 of the revised Terms of Reference, reflect the Committee's responsibility for approving program proposals and reviewing the annual report of the Faculty Councils.

The revised Terms of Reference are attached as Appendix F 33KB [This link opens in a new window.]

For Consent

(A consent agenda item is deemed to be approved unless, prior to the commencement of a meeting, one or more members of Council advise the Chair of a request to discuss it.)

1. Proposed New Course Proposal Form

The Curriculum and Program Review Committee recommends:

that the New Course Proposal Form be used at the Faculty Council level.

Rationale:

The New Course Proposal Form will ensure that information collected on new courses is complete and in the same format across faculties.

The form is attached as Appendix G 38KB [This link opens in a new window.].
